Perm: ARS, 2018. Sewn pb. This catalogue of an exhibition in Perm State Art Gallery shows the role of the Stroganov family as collectors and patrons of the arts whose wealth and artistic savvy brought great works of world art to Russia, many of which are now in the Hermitage Museum. First eminent as Ural Mt. industrialists, the Stroganovs formed regioinal workships for icon-painting and embroidery. In the eighteenth century the family began to collect art making inspired selections especially of Western European fine and decorative arts. Exhibited in Perm and published here are works now in the Hermitage and the Regional Art Gallery of Tambov, where the Stroganovs had their estate Znamenskoe. Besides scrupulous entries and excellent illustrations of the works, the catalogue has biographical chapters on the Stroganovs from the eighteenth century to the 1917 revolution when their art and palace were nationalized. Among the major French, Italian, Dutch, and Russian artists the Stroganovs collected are Hubert Robert, Poussin, Bartolomeo Bandinelli, van Ostade, van Dyck, and Karl Briullov. Also published are visual documents (e.g., portraits, drawings and photos of interiors) that bring to life the different members of the Stroganov family, their collecting ardor, and the homes where they enjoyed their collections such as the palace on Nevsky Prospect in St. Petersburg designed by Rastrelli. 158 p., approx. 200 color illus., Rus. with summary in ENGLISH.
