St. Petersburg: Slavia, 2003. Sewn cl. This monograph on the first century of photography in the Russian imperial capital has interest first as a look at the way photographic art and technology developed among Russian and Western European photographers working in St. Petersburg; second, as a look at how getting one’s portrait taken became a social norm, a way of establishing one’s solidity or social standing; and, third, as a mirror of changes toward social mobility in the arts — in the second chapter covering the late nineteenth and early twentieth century we find the first professional photographers who were women and the first who were from the peasant class; in that period also had a novelty — “open letters” or photographic post cards. The photographs published come mainly from a private collection and amply illustrate the two main genres of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, landscape and portraiture, and the main subject of the early Soviet period, propaganda images relating to the revolution and political figures ( Lenin , Voroshilov, Zhdanov, Kirov). 471 p., 31 cm, approx. 800 b/w illus., Rus. and ENGLISH.
