Moscow: Garazh, 2018. Sewn pb. The themes of this book about architects and artists collaborating to design an ensemble in Moscow’s central park are urban planning, park design, and the welter of architectural styles of the early decades of the Soviet period. The remarkable result of Aleksei Shchusev’s talented orchestration of various designs was a major work of civic architecture of the 1920s–40s, including exhibition space, cinema, and a pavilion to display World War II trophy armaments. Separate chapters trace the history of earlier and later buildings on the site. Visual documents such as architects’ drawings and plans, artists’ sketches for murals, archival and new photography com from over a dozen museums, archives, and private collections. Colorful murals were a major part of the design, and A. A. Deineika, N. P. and G. P. Pashkov, and Ia. P. Golubev, among others, worked on murals and paintings for Shchusev's design of the Crafts Pavilion. Many of the drawings are published here for the first time. Also included are writings by contemporaries on the role of parks in the city such as an article by El Lissitskii "The Future of the Park of Culture and Relaxation." 197 p., 29 cm, approx. 300 color and b/w illus., Rus.
