The collection of musical instruments now at the Museum of Theater and Music in St. Petersburg is among the most extensive in the world. Fine examples of instruments from Western Europe (esp., Germany and France), Russia, Central and East Asia (esp., China). The museum's collection stems from the work of a nineteenth-century collector, the director of the Imperial Orchestra Baron Konstantin K. Shtakel'berg, and now holds 3300 works. The author curator of the collection Vladimir Koshelev has studied the instruments for many years and with this edition publishes the first volume of the first scholarly catalogue of the collection. Koshelov's introduction sketches the collection's history and highlights each section's most notable pieces. The catalogue entries describe the works in full, providing the instrument maker (when known), materials, dating, and provenance. Many of the musical instruments are notable examples of decorative art, and this catalogue illustrates them beautifully: details show the exquisite woodworking and ornamentation such as carving on a German harp, miniature paintings on a harpsichord, and inlaid wood on Russian pipes known as gusli. 334 p., 26 cm, approx. 400 color illus., Rus.
