Moscow: Garazh, 2019. Sewn pb. This catalogue of the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art publishes architectural designs most on paper — paintings, water colors, drawings, engravings, and collages, but also some of metal and other materials—which date to the 1980s. They stem from a movement of the late Soviet period when young architects, rebelling against the constraints of state commissions, found an alternative medium for their creativity. Most were trained in the Moscow Institute of Architecture, and their drawings and designs were intended not to gain specific commissions but to stimulate imagination and thought about what architecture could be or to mock what it was. Their works were a form of nonconformist art. The authors identify precedents for paper architecture in eighteenth-century France and Italy and among Soviet architects of the avant-garde of the 1920s–30s whose designs were too extreme for realization. 375 p., approx. 350 color and b/w illus., Rus.
