Three Petersburg Collections, volume I / Tri peterburgskie kollektsii, tom I

St. Petersburg: Rus muz, 2019. Ilya Paleev built the collection that is the subject of the first volume of the Russian Museum’s fruitful collaboration with private collectors. Paleev built the collection now belonging to his family in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, his main interest being Russian art of the early twentieth century. During the Soviet period very few people were allowed to travel abroad and few had a chance to see the works of Russian émigré artists. Another gap was artists of experimental styles and those blackballed as decadent. These are the artists Paleev was especially interested; for example, impressionistic paintings by Natalia Goncharova and works by the circle of artists associated with the World of Art movement. He managed to collect their works and patronize who had trained in the avant-garde period and stayed in the Soviet Union such as Robert Falk, Nathan Altman, and Vladimir Lebedev. The exhibition and catalogue give access to works not before published including choice paintings and drawings by Konstantin Somov, Boris Anisfeld, Pavel Kuznetsov, Leonid Chupiatov, and Boris Grigor'ev. 103 p., 32 cm, approx. 100 color illus., Rus. or ENGLISH.
