St. Petersburg: Herm, 2019. Sewn pb. The research published in this Hermitage catalogue is relevant to current art-historical interests: the role of the collector and the establishment of provenance. The Stroganovs first became art patrons in the sixteenth century thanks to their flourishing Ural Mt. enterprises, and this is the first study to focus on the last of the great collectors and patrons. Coming of age about a half century before the collapse of the Russian Empire, Pavel A. Stroganov in the tradition of his family had the vision and wherewithal to select and acquire first-rate works of art, many of which are now at the Hermitage. His main interests were Italian painting of the fourteenth to the sixteenth centuries and Dutch painting of the seventeenth century; he also collected Flemish, English, German, and Russian art — he acquired Karl Briullov's great painting of the disorders at night in Rome in 1846; Briullov also did a portrait of Stroganov in his prime, which the Hermitage chose for the catalogue's cover. Besides publishing works now in the Hermitage and other museums that derive from Stroganov's inspired collecting, the catalogue publishes drawings, watercolors, and photographs of the interiors of his house, which give us a sense of how the collector displayed and enjoyed his collection. An appendix publishes a manuscript catalogue of 1864 indicating where Pavel Stroganov's paintings were acquired and their prices. 233 p., 29 cm, approx. 200 color illus., Rus. with title page and summary in ENGLISH.
