Zurich, St. Petersburg: Muzei iskusstva S-P XX–XXI vekov / International Art Project, n.d. sewn cl. This catalogue of an an exhibition at the Museum of 20th- and 21st-Century Art in St. Petersburg displays the work of three artists. Tatiana Nazarene has a style that mixes the stark clear forms of icon painting with grotesque and ironic distortions. Her paintings published here date to the 1990s and early 2000s. Alexey Novikov adapts styles of the avant-garde period to create images that are often caricatures. When Malevich used the image of the peasant, rural life and the wrenching changes it was undergoing were central to Russia's evolution. Alexey Novikov seems to choose similar subjects in a tone of nostalgia for a quaint and lost past. Igor Novikov was trained in Moscow in the 1970s and in the last years of the Soviet Union became associated with different groups of nonconformist artists. Superimposing cartoonish figures on subjects painted realistically, often alluding to canonical paintings, he caricatures and deflates norms. 139 p., 29 cm, approx. 100 color illus., ENGLISH.
