St. Petersburg: Herm, 2012. sewn cl. This latest edition of the Hermitage Museum’s complete catalogues combines thorough scholarship with exquisite works of art prolifically illustrated. The penchant for things French in the Russian court meant avid collecting first of all by the imperial family. In a detailed introduction the author outlines the history of the collection; points out its strengths — pieces from all stylistic phases of the eighteenth and early nineteenth century such as rococo, neoclassicism, empire, and historicism; and identifies principal gold- and silversmiths and their brethren of various specialties. The artistic and stylistic innovations of French goldsmiths are illustrated by a remarkable variety of work: snuff boxes, caskets, cases for toiletries, needle holders, and sundry other objects made from precious metals and gems. The metalwork of the reliefs and the painted enamels that are central to many of the designs are often given full-page plates, making it possible to appreciate the virtuosity of the workmanship and to realize how different arts merge: painting and sculpture were often integral to jewelry design. An appendix of signatures and hallmarks and three indexes make the book a good reference on French decorative art. 440 pp., 27 cm, 7 b-&-w illus., 815 color, Rus. with introduction and table of contents in ENGLISH.
