Novgorodskaia ikona 12 – 17 vekov (Novgorod Icons of the 12th to the 17th c.)

St. Petersburg: Avrora, 2007. Sewn cl. Since the later nineteenth century the supreme achievements of Russian medieval painting have first and foremost been identified with the Novgorodian icon. Throughout the entire early Russian period, starting from the eleventh century, Novgorod ranked as a major spiritual and artistic center of Europe, renowned for the superb mastery of its icon-painters, architects and craftsmen. At the time of Kievan Russia the city had very close links with the Byzantine world and therefore drew into its orbit many foreign masters of the first magnitude. The salient features of the local school of icon-painting manifested themselves with particular force in the fifteenth century, which is justly considered its golden age. Reproduced are some of the most significant icons from the twelfth to the seventeenth centuries, housed in the major museums of Novgorod, Moscow and St.Petersburg. In the main, they come from Novgorod’s cathedrals as well as churches and monasteries found in its suburbs. Viewed together, these icons offer a rich overview of the city’s spiritual culture and creative searchings spanning six centuries.
