St. Petersburg: Muzei istorii Sankt-Peterburga, 2019. Sewn pb. Certain periods of art history are simple progressions and evolutions of style. In the Soviet Union political history had a heavy influence on art history, and in one notably public form of art, theater posters, the impact of depersonalized, enforced staidness of the Stalinist period killed avant-garde experimentation and led to almost two decades of undistinguished work. As the author demonstrates in her substantive introduction to the catalogue poster art in the twentieth century did not enjoy a continuous history of development from the Silver Age and Avant-Garde, but had to be reinvented after Stalin's death and the onset of a political and cultural thaw in the mid 1950s. Publishing its remarkable collection - many posters for the first time since they were originally used to promote shows - the Museum of the History of St. Petersburg fills a gap in the rich history of Russian poster art. 238 p., 34 cm, approx. 200 color illus., Rus.
