Russkaia skul’ptura XVI–XIX vv. Tot'ma (Russian sculpture of the 16 to the 19th c. from Tot'ma)

Moscow: Burganov-Tsentr, 2013. Sewn cl. The Totma museum’s collection catalogue in the Bugarov series on relatively unknown works of sculpture originating in churches of the Russian north and now in distant northern city museums, is especially strong in the distinctly Eastern Orthodox forms of church art: royal doors and iconostases. Most date to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and, created in a milieu far from Moscow, demonstrate an independent, naive but forceful style. The catalogue entries are thorough and pay special attention to provenance, tracing how the collection was formed— many of the works were salvaged from specific churches around Tot’ma that were closed in the early Soviet period. The high quality of the illustrations and many details are conducive to appreciation of the works. 183 p., 27 cm, approx. 150 color illus., Rus. Item #3595
