Petrovskii putevoi dvorets (Petrov Road Palace)

Moscow: Lingva–F / Muzei Moskvy, 2014. Sewn cl. The phenomenon of the road palace arose in the Russian imperial period: having founded a new capital on the Baltic, Peter the Great and his successors in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries still needed to travel to Moscow where customary court rituals including coronation were still held. This brief study focuses on one commissioned by Catherine the Great and designed by two major architects of the late eighteenth century Matvei Kazakov and Vasilii Bazhenov. After looking briefly at its design, the author surveys the role of Petrov Palace in court life and ceremony. 63 p., approx. 20 color and b/w illus., Rus. Item #3682
