Mikhailo Makhaev: Master vidovogo risunka XVIII veka (Mikhailo Makhaev: 18th-c. Master of Veduta Drawings)

St. Petersburg: Zhurnal Neva, 2003. This is the first monograph on an artist whose drawings and engravings left an invaluable record of young St. Petersburg and of Moscow in the mid-eighteenth century. Working for years at the Russian Academy of Arts, Makhaev left many documents about his methods of work and his life (e.g., the only extant letters by a Russian artist of the eighteenth century), which illuminate techniques of engraving and in general artistic life of the period. The author analyzes Makhaev’s standing in comparison with his counterparts in Western European of the age and looks at his collaboration with foreign artists while at the Academy. 448 pp., 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 ins., 174 b-&-w illus., sewn cl., Rus., , Item #3754
