Moscow: Tret'iakovskaia galereia, 2020. Hardcover. The curators and authors of this gargantuan catalogue of an exhibition at the Tretyakov Gallery muster so many varied works — painting, graphic art, photography, cinema stills, performances — that they create an anatomy of the last two decades or so of the Soviet period. No facile groupings but merely a large number of visual documents let the age speak for itself. Five substantive articles give the visual material a political, psychological, and sociological framework. Now a half century away the period under consideration can be seen as part of art history and not just a kaleidoscope of ephemera. As a sequel to another extensive exhibition "The Thaw" (1917) which covered the 1950s and 1960s, the curators select what they see as the most significant works of the period not from an aesthetic or stylistic point of view: rather, they choose works that were signs of the time, showing the cracks in the foundation of the Soviet Union, maybe vaguely presaging its demise. Different chapters focus on painting, graphic art, design, cinema, and authors look at the works as art and for clues of what they say about social and political processes. An appendix chronicles artistic, social, and political events from 1968 to 1985. 487 p., 32 cm, approx. 550 color and b/w illus., Rus. with summary and list of illustrations in ENGLISH. Item #3863
