The artists of Palekh decorated local churches with frescoes and icons and sold icons at fairs around Russia. Most extant icons and frescoes date to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. After the 1917 revolution the artists turned to a secular form of art painting folk scenes on lacquer boxes.
