Kazan: Zaman, 2020. Sewn pb. This catalogue of a large exhibition in Kazan on post-war Soviet art enables us to infer which styles and genres prevailed in the last few decades of the Soviet period. The latitude that artists enjoyed during the Thaw of the late 1950s and 60s broke the clichés of the Stalinist period (collective farms, industrializing, the glamor of party leaders). Abstraction, primitivism, and irony were not among the sanctioned styles at state art schools and exhibitions, and most of the paintings published here are in a realistic vein on approved Soviet subjects, but the tone of the works is more difficult to specify and individual styles and methods of expression are freer. If there is optimism, it seems forced, the propaganda of the Brezhnev period of "stagnation" (zastoi) is jaded. What especially enriches this exhibition is the abundance of works by both local artists of southern Russia, Tatarstan — Kazan became an art center after the revolution when such artists as Nikolai Feshin and Alexander Rodchenko taught there — and artists whose careers unfolded in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
