St. Petersburg: Herm, 2020. Sewn pb. The works of Carl Fabergé's studios had no direct followers after the 1917 revolution. The consummate level of craftsmanship, the richness of materials, benefiting especially from Russia's mineral and gem deposits, and the flight of fancy that characterize Fabergé's best works demanded a clientele like the Romanovs, who sought to please and dazzle with their gifts. This catalogue of a current Hermitage exhibition publishes about one hundred works from six different collections. Among them are jewelry worn at court ceremonies and examples of applied art for everyday use (at the Russian Imperial court) - cigarette and cigar cases, picture frames, clocks, and vases, for example. They all demonstrate that the arts of stone carving, metalwork and jewelry flourished in Fabergé's workshops and that artists who drew the design were attuned to nuances of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century style. 244 p., 22 cm, approx. 150 color illus., Rus. with title page and summary in ENGLISH.
