Goncharnyi zavod M. V. Kharlamova (M. V. Kharlamov Ceramics Factory)

St. Petersburg: Kolo, 2020. Sewn pb. The works of enamel tiles that distinguish late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century interiors and façades in Russia came from a relatively small number of craft factories. This monograph focuses on the enamel tile workshop/factory of Mikhail Kharlamov in St. Petersburg. Founded by his father Vasilii and run by his mother Maria, Mikhail after training at the Academy of Fine Arts raised the artistic level of works produced and received commissions for such prestigious projects as the Yusupov mansion in Moscow, the palaces of grand princes Nikolai Konstantinovich and Vladimir Alexandrovich, and the Church of Christ the Savior in St. Petersburg. Many of the works survive, and the authors provide abundant well photographed and nicely reproduced examples Russian stoves, icons and iconostasis, architectural ornaments. Delving into the design process, the authors point out how how Kharlamov's training as a sculptor prepared him to do design drawings for ceramic works; some of the works published here have only recently been attributed to individual artists in his factory. The most vivid examples are perhaps enameled titles of Russian stoves whose fanciful and geometric patterns seem to have parallels in Islamic art and to foreshadow abstract works of the avant-garde. 165 p., 20 cm, approx. 100 color illus., Rus.
