Moscow: Gostudarstvennyi muzei istorii russkoi literatury imeni V.I. Dalia, 2020. Sewn pb. The history of art owes much to those who have had the inspiration, knowledge, and means to build great collections that become museums. In the Soviet period acknowledging the role of private collectors was overlooked — most of them were members of the suppressed class of gentry whose collections were nationalized. In recent years Russian state museums are offsetting this injustice by acknowledging and lauding the role of individual collectors in recognizing great works and done in Russia and abroad. The subject of this catalogue of an exhibition organized by the Dahl State Literature Museum and the Tretyakov Gallery is one such collector: Ilya Ostroukhov, who collected works by his contemporaries such as Ilya Repin, Vasilii Surikov, Mikhail Vrubel', and Valentin Serov and some Western European artists (e.g., Rodin, Manet); his greatest achievement was finding and authenticating with the help of Nikolai Likhachev medieval icons, which had only recently begun to be seen not only as objects of Orthodox ritual, but also as works of art. Masterpieces of fifteenth-, sixteenth- and seventeenth-century icon-painting were originally acquired by Ostroukhov and displayed in his home museum in the later imperial and early Soviet periods. Photographs of the interiors of Ostroukhov's house are full of revelations about how he understood and chose to present the art. The collection was broken up and dispersed to various state museums after his death in 1929. 459 p., 30 cm, approx. 300 color and b/w illus., Rus. Item #3980
