St. Petersburg: Frants Art Foundation, 2020. Sewn pb. This catalogue exemplifies the practice of private collectors of mapping out a period or an artist and becoming preeminent in collecting relevant works. Kononikhin has collected and publishes here works in all genres and from all periods in the career of Vera Matiukh, who was born in Berlin but came to the Soviet Union at age thirteen in the heyday of the Russian avant-garde. She studied with Vasily Ermilov in Kharkov and became adept at painting and drawing in the different styles evolving in the avant-garde by training with Pavel Kondratiev, and then Lev Iudin and Konstanin Rozhdestvenski at GINKhUK (State Institute of Artistic Culture). After the second world was she worked with Boris Ermolaev and Anatolii Kaplan in color lithography at the Leningrad Experimental Graphics Workshop — her works were shown in momentous exhibitions organized by Eric Estorick in London and New York. Her creative enegy never ebbed and she was still illustrating books and painting watercolors in the 1990s. 252 p., 24 cm, approx. 200 color illus., Rus. with title page, captions, and summary in ENGLISH.
