This catalogue of a Tretyakov Gallery exhibition is exceptional for publishing works by a major twentieth-century Russian and American painter (after emigrating became well known for his depictions of southwestern America and its native inhabitants) from his hometown — Kazan. The State Museum of Fine Arts of the Tartar Republic in Kazan has the largest collection of Feshin's works in Russia, many received as a gift from the artist grateful to the city where he had first studied art (later he trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg and at experimental workshops) and where he taught after the 1917 revolution. The works date mainly to the early stages of his career, when he experimented with various styles, and they display a powerful and mercurial talent. They show both a command of the conventional styles of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries (realism, impressionism) and an ability to venture forth in strange sweeps of color and form that go back to Goya and forward to Francis Bacon.
