Most of the works of Asian sculpture and metalwork entered Tsarskoe Selo's collections in the eighteenth century when Charles Cameron was designing the interiors according to the taste of Catherine the Great. Others were acquired by Grand Duke Nicholas Alexandrovich (future Nicholas II) during his trip to the Far East before he acceded to the throne; others he received as diplomatic gifts. The first two sections consist of works of bronze sculpture — works of applied art and Buddhist sculpture. The third section publishes painted enamels dating to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and originating in China. The final section publishes works using cloisonné technique, which were created in China and Japan and date to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries: vases, plates, lamps, and illustrated panels. Chosen for the imperial family, most works are of high quality. The catalogue is nicely illustrated with full-page illustrations and many details bringing out the artistry and design of the works. Autochromes and watercolors show how the works decorated rooms of the palaces at Tsarskoe Selo.
