Petr Pervyi. Kollektsioner, issledovatel', khudozhnik / Peter the Great: Collector, Scholar, Artist
Moscow: Gos Istoricheskii muzei (GIM), 2019. Sewn pb. The State Historical Museum in Moscow does not shy away from taking an unconventional view of history, and here they use many documents, written and visual, to show Peter the Great in the round. Among his singular qualities were his willingness to humble himself to learn crafts in The Netherlands and England; his pride at receiving an attestation that he was qualified to work as a ship's carpenter; his technical aptitude — for example, he designed a compass, learned etching, and mastered the lathe. Some fifteen museums, archives, and libraries in Russia, Germanyp and England contributed to the exhibition; many are works of applied and decorative art that were used as diplomatic gifts both to Peter and from him; most were made in Germany, the Netherlands, and Russia. 335 p., 30 cm, approx. 300 color illus., Rus. with title page, captions, and summary in ENGLISH.
