Fotograf Sergei Levitskii (Photographer Sergey Levitsky)
St. Petersburg: Herm, 2021. Sewn cl. In this Hermitage monograph, the author use the career of one early photography, Sergei Levitskii, as the background for a detailed overview of the first half century of the history of photography not only in Russia but in Europe. Levitskii, trained as a lawyer and working for a government ministry, became fascinated by the new technology of photography and using a Chevalier lens took his first experimental pictures in the Caucasus in the 1840s. Consulting with chemists, opticians, mechanics, and artists, and spending a long study trip in Paris, Levitskii developed the technical and aesthetic acumen to make daguerreotypes — 75 of which are published here — and photographs of the highest quality in the varying genres of the new art-science. 526 p., 28 cm, approx. 400 color and b/w illus., Rus. with title page, table of contents and detailed summary in ENGLISH.
