This catalogue of an exhibition at the Tretyakov Gallery brings out the similarities of style and the singulariites of content in of the southern steppe and the Caspian Sea, in particular the cape area of Apsheron jutting out into the sea east of Bakuin today's Azrbaidzhan. Works of painting and sculpture by thirteen artists, some continuing the experiments of the avant-garde, others working in a realistic vein, together with biographical sketches and stylistic commentary give a good look at a significant and distinctive branch of twentieth-century art.
