St. Petersburg: Muzei teatral'nogo i muzykal'nogo iskusstva, 2021. Sewn cl. Censorship in 1920s was more relaxed than in tsarist times and far freer than in the Stalinist period. The population boom from migration to the cities, the first mingling of classes, the relative sufficiency after civil war and famine. and dekulakization and its woes still years away, allowed for leisure and entertainment. These circumstances were conducive to the multiplying of theaters of all kinds — the large theaters built in the tsarist period and many small private theaters, and workshops and studios staged from concerts and ballet to dramatic theater, musical comedy, and circuses. Thanks to the contributions of seven museums together with private collectors this catalogue of an exhibition at the Museum of Theater and Music Art in St. Petersburg publishes 202 works including posters, design drawings for sets, costumes and street celebrations; and archival photographs, which document visually the extraordinary richness and variety of the period. Many are published for the first time. Among the artists who disigned for the theater were Yurii Annenkov, Alexandra Exter, and Natan Altman. 247 p., 27 x 22 cm, approx. 200 color amd b/w illus., Rus. with cataligue of 202 works and summary in ENGLISH.
