This catalogue of an exhibition publishes rarely seen works from the Tropinin Museum and private collections, which together chronicle visually how a school of secular portrait painting arose and evolved in Russia. Rus', Muscovy and the Russian Empire had of course a long history of painting saints and religious figures for use as icons. Portraiture had different demands and subjects, and the curators by choosing different focal points show how a Russian school of painters selecting local subjects but adopting professional know-how often learned in study trips to Western Europe soon vied with counterparts having long traditions of portraiture.
