Moscow: Severnyi palomnik, 2007. sewn cl. This is the first volume of a large-scale research project on the history of Russian art. It offers an exhaustive account of works of art and architecture which appeared in Rus’ after the adoption of Christianity in the late tenth century. The focus is on majestic cathedrals in three Russian towns: the cathedrals were centers of spiritual life and a new world outlook that inherited and developed the traditions of Byzantium. The most complex art of the period was found in the fresco and mosaic ensembles of Kiev, which are examined in detail; other masterworks are illuminated manuscripts and the monumental sculpture that formed an inseparable part of church decoration. A separate chapter deals with the role of ornament in painting. The illustrations included not only add to the text but also have a great value of their own. Most of the 635 illustrations have been executed specially for this edition. Contents: Introduction. I. Livshits.
