Vremia sobirat’: russkoe iskusstvo iz zarubezhnykh chastnykh kollektsii / A Time to Gather: Russian Art from Private Foreign Collections

St. Petersburg: Rus muz, 2007. sewn cl. This exhibition catalogue of works from many sources outside Russia publishes lesser known works by avant-garde painters of the twentieth century such as Goncharova, Malevich, Larionov, Konchalovskii, A. Exter; by many well-known artists of late imperial Russia such as Repin, Somov, Roerich, Korovin, Vasnetsov, and Dobuzhinskii; by major nineteenth-century figures such as Kiprenskii, Briullov, Venetsianov, Ivanov, and Troponin; by the first significant portraitists in Russian art, Rokotov and Borovikhovskii. As such it expands the understanding of the main currents of Russian art history; and it is also full of discoveries, publishing unknown and inaccessible works by artists who emigrated from Russia before their reputations were established. The last chapters present homogeneous collections: the John Stuart collection of small boxes by the best jewelers of Imperial Russia and ornate icon frames; the A. Lachman collection of photographs of the early Soviet period with works by, among others, El Lissitky and A. Rodchenko; and the E. Rotmann collection of silver of the seventeenth to the nineteenth century. Biographies of eighty-seven artists and two indexes facilitate the use of the book as a source on nineteenth- and twentieth-century Russian art. 337 pp., 9 3/4 x 12 1/4 ins., 49 b-&-w illus., 288 color,, Rus. or ENGLISH.
