Besides the illustrations taken from Vasnetsov’s books, the authors publish archival photos, written documents, and preparatory drawings, which enable readers to experience the process of creating the art and the books, the interplay of the artist with publishers and printers, and the response to his books in the press, among critics and readers, such as a 1949 article “For Socialist Realism in Art,” in which the writer claimed that Vasnetsov’s “formalistic” approach shows that he “does not know Soviet reality and does not respect Soviet man.” A list of all works published during Vasnetsov’s lifetime and a bibliography of writings about his work provides useful reference material for the history of book illustration and children’s books in the Soviet Union.
