The New Museum (Novyi muzei), a private museum opened several years ago in St. Petersburg and specializing in twentieth-century and contemporary art, publishes in this beautifully produced catalogue major artists working in Leningrad during the second half of the twentieth century. Aref'ev as the eldest of this group of artists set the tone in the 1950s for nonconformist art in Leningrad. Several of the artists studied at Leningrad's Secondary School of Art, were expelled for formalism. They came together in new artistic circles such as the Association of Experimental Art (TEII, Tovarishchestvo eksperimental'nogo izobrazitel'nogo iskusstva). During the Soviet period they were limited to private shows, the so-called "apartment exhibitions,' the only way in which their art could be shown.
