Moscow: Sev Pal, 2014. Sewn pb. The belt in the dress of various peoples from central Russia, the far north, south to the Caucasus, and east to Siberia had far more than a practical purpose: it brightened a wardrobe from ornamental colors and patterns, it also had talismanic and symbolic meaning. The extraordinary range of designs, the varied weaving methods, and the metalwork of buckles make them distinctive works of applied art. Photos drawn from the museum's archive show provide additional visual documentation of how belts complemented other articles of clothing. Most works date to the nineteenth and early twentieth century. 232 p., 23 cm, approx. 250 color and b/w illus., Rus. sewn pb. Item #590
