Many of these works published in this Hermitage exhibition catalogue entered the museum after the 1917 revolution, when the state took over various nineteenth-century private collections. The introduction traces the formation of the collection from of Limoges enamels at the Hermitage, noting the main private collectors whose astuteness brought these masterpieces of French medieval art to Russia. The extensive entries describe the works in detail, compare them with others of the period, and interpret the imagery, pointing out, for example, such iconographic curiosities as the individualized faces of the evangelists in certain pieces of the twelfth century before set types became current.
