St. Petersburg: Muzei istorii Sankt-Peterburga, 2013. sewn cl. Giving a gift of a decorated egg at Easter is a long tradition in Russia culminating in Faberge's celebrated works commissioned by the tsar. This catalogue publishes ornamental Easter eggs made from glass during the reign of Nicholas I (1825-55) to those of the early twentieth century and the end of the imperial period. In style they range from the gilded and staid decoration of Empire style to the sinuous lines of art nouveau. The most refined works were produced at the Imperial Porcelain Factory and the Imperial Glass Factory often to commissions of the court. The author traces sources of imagery in icon-painting and secular art. The elegant format and high-quality illustrations show the beauty of this distinctive area of decorative arts. 130 p., 27 cm, approx. 120 color illus., Rus. Item #663
