Aleksandra Shchekatikhina-Pototskaia 1892 – 1967

St. Petersburg: Rus muz, 2009. sewn cl. In his article reprinted here and written for a catalogue of a 1926 exhibition of the artist’s work in Paris, Morris Denis wrote “You have imaginatively found the most congenial material which more than any other allows you to realize innovations and embody the richness and elegance of your oriental taste… I enjoy your drawings and paintings as much as the refined designs of your cups and plates. I find in them spontaneity, poetry, Slavic charm and a feminine touch.” In this retrospective exhibition of the artist’s work at the Russian Museum Shchekotikhina-Pototskaia defies the categories in which Soviet art of the period is usually classified. Her designs for porcelain from the 1920s to the 50s with their elongated figures, oriental costume, and Middle Eastern motifs are truly her own, and in her paintings and drawings comprising bazaars and villages of Egypt and France, figures from folk art and Slavic mythology, and scenes from children’s stories, she harks back to the romantic age’s fondness for the exotic while using modern techniques. 143 pp., 9 x 13 ins., 172 color illus., sewn cl., Rus., , Item #709
