This is the first scholarly catalogue of a unique collection of some 250 crosses that formed part of the costume of peoples in various regions of the Russian Empire. As a symbol of faith, as a talisman, and as an aesthetic element of traditional costume, the crosses, some the work of Russian artists and others of craftsmen of other ethnic groups, are made of precious metals and incorporate both religiious symbolism and ornamental styles of jewelry. The authors and museum restorers specify techniques and determine dating for many of the pieces.
