St. Petersburg: Rus Muz, 2011. sewn cl. The vague title of this catalogue does not express the serious scholarly content of a catalogue that publishes an exhibition at the Russian Museum and the Tretyakov Gallery on the ways in which the Eastern Orthodox church commissioned, inspired, and cared for many great works of medieval Russian art. The curators and authors have brought together illuminated manuscripts, icons, sculpture, metalwork, and textiles from twenty-six museums to illustrate the impulse the church gave to art and architecture. Catalogue entries publish data on each work—title, date and place of creation, technique, size, state of preservation, and provenance. In commentary on each work authors analyze style and interpret content to illuminate the historical and spiritual background of Russian art. Articles introducing each section deal with general themes. Chapter titles: “The Baptism of Ancient Rus’ and Features of Russian Artistic Culture in the Pre-Mongol Period”; “Under the Virgin’s Protection…Veneration of Icons of the Theotokos in Russia”; “Intercessors and Mentors: Russian Saints and Their Veneration”; “Monasteries and Monastic Culture in Old Russia”; “The Earthly Kingdom and the Kingdom of Heaven”; “The Sacred in the Everyday: The Icon and the Russian World. An ‘Unnumbered Host’ of Icons”; “Heaven on Earth…The Beauty of the Church.” The large format and expert printing in Italy permit careful observation of the works. 496 pp., 9 ¾ x 13 ins., 428 color illus., sewn cl., Rus. or ENGLISH; Russian edition available entitled Sviataia Rus'.
