St. Petersburg: Dmitrii Bulanin, 2008. sewn cl. The flight from Soviet Russia of many talented artists, architects, and scholars after the 1917 revolution benefited the countries in which they settled: in their painting and building, whether for Russian emigré enclaves or for the communities of their adopted countries, Russians brought with them the styles and methods of their careers in early twentieth-century Russia, a period of exceptional originality and achievement. They thus disseminated a hybrid form of Russian art and architecture rooted in Russia but shaped by a new environment and new sources of commissions. Research on their work was presented at a conference in St. Petersburg in 2007 on which this book is based. This is the first book to focus exclusively on the accomplishments of Russians abroad in art and architecture, and many of the illustrations are published here for the first time. 478 p. + 160 pls., 6 3/8 x 8 3/8 ins., approx. 90 b-&-w illus, 137 color, Rus.
