The Iconostasis of Sts. Peter and Paul Cathedral

St. Petersburg: Muzei istorii Sankt-Peterburga, 2004. sewn pb., This catalogue publishes for the first time all the icons of the iconostasis of the church built by Trezzini for Peter the Great in the first quarter of the eighteenth century. The catalogue entries establish dates of painting, give size and condition, note Greek inscriptions, materials, and technique for all forty-three icons. Painted in the 1720s and 1730s, these icons epitomize the new style of icon-painting (pozdniaia ikona), when artists under the influence of Peter the Great’s westernizing began to move closer to Western-European art. The authors identify literary sources of the icons in the Bible and Apocrypha and artistic sources, such as engravings and paintings by Western-European artists. Besides the catalogue entries, the many citations, substantial bibliography, and nicely reproduced icons will make this catalogue a basic source on Russian icon-painting of the imperial period. 126 pp., 7 5/8 x 10 1/4 ins., 32 b-&-w illus., 49 color, ENGLISH.
