Pamiatniki arkhitektury v dorevoliutsionnoi Rossii: ocherki istorii arkhitekturnoi restavratsii (Architectural Monuments in Pre-Revolutionary Russia: Toward a History of Architectural Restoration)

Moscow: 2002. sewn pb. The authors use abundant written and visual documents to the origins of architectural preservation in Russia. They show how Russian artists and architects and intellectuals gradually became aware of the aesthetic achievements of their ancestors and of the need to save them. The authors delve into the prehistory of architectural preservation in Russia during the eighteenth century, when Peter the Great's insistence on adopting Western European forms brought a change of building methods and style, but later spurred a reaction against novelty and efforts to adapt Western approaches to a Muscovite base. Preservation as a real effort to recognize and save what was valuable in the past began only in the nineteenth century. It depended in part on ideology, the state's desire to establish the identity of the nation based on the culture of the past, and in part on the work of eminent artists, architects, and scholars, such as N. Roerich, A. Shchusev, N. Kondakov and F. Buslaev, who sought not only to preserve but emulate what was distinctive in the art and architecture of the past. The authors publish many examples of works that were preserved and describe how methods of preservation were refined during the second half of the nineteenth century and in the early years of the twentieth. 536 pp., 7 ¾ x 10 ½ ins., 285 b-&-w illus., 84 color, sewn cl., Rus. with contents and summary in ENGLISH.
