The origin of the Hermitage's great collection of ancient gold jewelry were the archeological digs led by Russian scholars in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The gold objects made at the Greek colonies on the Black Sea has a unique style based on works of the Greek mainland and the influence of local artistic tastes. The Hermitage collection also has works imported to the settlements from Greece and works of Scythian origin. The period of works is broad ca. 600 B.C. to ca. A.D. 300.
