St. Petersburg: Rus muz, 2013. sewn cl. These works exhibited at the Russian Museum come from over twenty museums, galleries, and private collections. Exhibiting and publishing such a variety of works leads to a new understanding and appreciation of Golovin’s talent. Associated with the World of Art movement, Golovin worked readily in several spheres including easel painting and costume and stage design. His designs for theater curtains were innovative and showed his ability to merge stage design with the architecture of the theater. His work in the theater began in 1900 at the Bolshoi Theater and marked a new direction for Russian stage design. He was among the first to regard designs conceived for the theater as independent works and include them in exhibitions. By 1902 he was chief designer at the Mariinskii Opera and Ballet Theater and the Alexandrinskii Dramatic theater in St. Petersburg, and in 1908 Diagilev used Golovin’s designs for Boris Godunov in the Paris season of the Ballets Russes. Golovin achieved for stage design a new status that put him on a level with composers and choreographers in the overall theater production, and his counterparts were the likes of Igor Stravinsky, Mikhail Fokine, and Vsevolod Meyerhold. In painting Golovin excelled at landscapes that had a decorative touch and still-lifes. His portraits, while not forsaking realism, have a modern psychological and sympathetic approach far from academic painting. The Russian Museum's catalogue ends with a sampling of Golovin’s book illustrations and designs for decorative and applied arts. 132 pp., 12 x 11 ½ ins., 5 b-&-w illus., 144 color, ENGLISH. Item #917
