As part of a national program to study and preserve collections of photographs in archives, museums, and libraries around Russia, the State Museum and Exhibition Center Rosfoto, specializing in the history of photography, initiated a conference in 2013 continuing the theme of its 2012 conference “Photography in Museums.” The authors characterize twenty-seven different collections in Moscow, St. Petersburg and areas throughout Russia in which significant photographic collections are located, noting the kind of materials, the time period, and the predominant subject matter of works in the collection. They trace the formation of the collections and publish a sampling of photographs from each collection.
