St. Petersburg: Herm, 2006. sewn pb. Works from Russia and Western Europe (mainly Germany, France, and Italy) predominate in this Hermitage exhibition catalogue, though there are examples of Turkish, Caucasian, Iranian, and Indian workmanship. These pieces reveal the exquisite artistry with which armorers recreated on a small scale designs and technical capacities of the arms and armor of knights and kings. Often intended as gifts for royal minors, these works were rarer than ones made on adult scale and were often commissioned from the best armorers of the day. The illustrations show off in fine detail the kinship of arms to sculpture and jewelry. 120 pp., 8 7/8 x 10 3/4 ins., 164 color illus., Rus. Item #387
