Kuritel’nye trubki, XVIII – nachalo XX vekov: fantaziia i kurez v melkoi plastiki (Pipes for Smoking, 16th to the Early 20th c.: Fantasy and Curio in Applied Sculpture)

St. Petersburg: Herm, 2009. Sewn cl. In this edition in the series Collections of the Hermitage a curator of decorative arts at the Hermitage publishes a lesser known branch of applied and decorative arts: pipes for smoking. The pipes were carved and sculpted in various European countries, including Russia. They are made of many materials—copper, silver, and other metals; ivory, amber and ceramics. They illustrate many levels of craftsmanship from elegant jewelry to the grotesque and whimsical. A final chapter on pipes in painting and drawing shows what an integral part of style and the imagery of relaxation—in one painting a beautifully dressed young woman reclining on a sofa receives a pipe from a servant, in another a Cossack guerrilla relishes his pipe as if it were as much a part of his military accouterments as his saber. 160 pp., 7 x 10 ins., 18 b-&-w illus, 120 color, sewn cl., Rus. Series: Collections of the Hermitage (Kollektsii Ermitazha). Item #1098
