St. Petersburg: Herm, 2005. sewn cl. This is the first complete catalogue of the Hermitage’s collection of this form of sculpture. Ivory carving in Russia flourished after the movement of the population into the far north beyond the Onega River to the mouth of the Pechora, where ivory from mammoth and walrus tusk for carving was plentiful. Styles influenced by the art of Novgorod and Moscow melded with northern folk traditions to produce a branch of artistic ivory several centuries after its medieval Western European counterpart. The collection includes specimens of the different stages of the art’s development, from works of the seventeenth century on religious subjects to figurines depicting local peoples and animals, which came into vogue in the nineteenth century. 180 pp., 27 cm, 430 color illus., Rus.
