Some of the works stem from the life style of the peasantry: household crafts like molding clay into toys, which filled the long winter nights; painted cupboards and distaffs brought the colors and forms of a brief summer inside the house to brighten it all year round: typical of the interior paintings are patterns of flowers painted on a base of green. Many works verge on the complexity and refinement of fine art: wooden sculpture of the seventeenth to the nineteenth century, usually figures of Christ or of St. Nicholas, are hewn to the purest essence and gain force from the expressive faces and simplicity of forms. Icons originating in workshops of the north provinces bear comparison with masterpieces of religious art. The museum’s collection of textiles illustrates two traditions: embroidery and printed patterns. They are both distinguished by unusual compositions and brilliant combinations of colors.
