Evgraf Peterovich Chemesov

St. Petersburg: Kriga, 2006. Sewn cl. This is the first attempt at a detailed account of the brief life and career of one of the eighteenth-century portrait engraver who recorded in lively engravings the magnates of the St. Petersburg. Using previous histories of eighteenth-century art in German and Russian as well as archival sources, Malinovskii shows how Chemesov raised engraving in Russia to a professional level so that collectors of the period considered Chemesov’s works on a par with those of his German teacher G. F. Schmidt. Chemesov spent his life studying engraving and teaching it at the Russian Academy of Fine Arts, so his biography also reveals much about art eduction in the Academy's early years. 139 pp., 8 1/4 x 11 ins., 40 b-&-w illus., sewn cl., Rus.
