"Serebriannaia kladovaia" Gosudarstvennogo muzeiia istorii religii / The Silver Treasure of the State Museum of the History of Religion

St. Petersburg: Muzei istorii religii, 2014. Sewn pb. Icon lamps, crosses, bible covers, censers, chalices, and especially icon frames, most dating to the nineteenth and early twentieth century display the many ways in which commissions for the church and private shrines fostered fine metalwork. The author attributes the works to artists at over twenty workshops from the most well-known such as Fabergé, Ovchinnikov, and Khlebnikov to less well-known ones. The works thus amount to a good survey of aesthetic and technical aspects of one branch of Russian applied and decorative arts during the last century or so of the imperial period. The author points out the highlights of the collection and the characteristics of the silversmith workshops, which are listed in a useful appendix. An appendix identifies workshops and factories. 119 p., approx. 150 color illus., Rus. and ENGLISH. Item #1231
